Advice
The Jomon-sugi cedar, considered a symbol of Yakushima, is one of the largest and oldest cedar trees in Japan, estimated to be around 7,200 years old. Reaching it is a truly memorable experience—a rigorous 22 km round-trip hike through deep forest taking 10 to 12 hours. The hike begins along the gentle incline of the Anbo Forest Railway Track, where you can take in the island’s natural beauty and gain a deeper sense of the history of its people. As the trail leaves the track to head deeper into the mountains, you pass landmarks like Wilson's Stump, famous for the heart-shaped view of the sky from inside, the majestic Daio-sugi cedar, which is over 3,000 years old, surrounded by the deep forests of the Natural World Heritage site.Reaching the Jomon-sugi cedar inspires a powerful moment as you stand face-to-face with the “King of the Forest,” which has withstood the passage of time for thousands of years.Since ancient times, Japanese people have believed that spirits dwell in great trees and massive stones—and this hike brings you close to such treasured natural phenomena. As the trail can feel very different depending on your physical condition, preparing well in advance before attempting the hike is highly recommended to maximize your enjoyment.
